I share your wish to allow for more control over isolated yet interconnected colors or ranges in the gamut. However, I personally think that color warper / 3D LUT creator is a flawed approach to providing a useful interface for this kind of work. Data that's inherently three dimensional doesn't map well to 2D displays and a higher level abstraction that offers the same functionality is usually much more useful.
The Color Range Mask and Compression Tool actually works a lot like the color warper under the hood but with a much simpler UI. I'm planning to extend the tool to allow creating multiple points and ranges. The framework already constructs a 3D lattice behind the scenes so individual color transforms will be connected and can use global smoothing.
I think that extending the Range Mask tool to cover the use cases of a color warper is the way forward for Color.io.
For visualization we could probably highlight the transform lattice in the 3D gamut visualizer, yet keep the interface nice and simple.
